Welcome to TAWLA, the leading women lawyers association in Tanzania.
The Tanzanian Women Lawyers' Association (TAWLA) marks twenty years of campaigning and support for women and children's rights this year. We're celebrating with the slogan 'Haki ya mwanamke ni haki ya wote' (women's rights are everyone's rights).
We've also taken the opportunity to look back at our achievements, which include:
- Reaching over 2 million people by raising awareness on legal rights via Radio/TV, training paralegals etc.
- Providing legal aid directly to more than 10,000 women and children over 20 years
- Helping to bring about legal reform, including giving women the right to own property (Land Act) and revisions to the Sexual Offences Act
- Coordinating the Gender Land Task Force (GLTF)
- Assisting women to resolve inheritance issues and promoting Will writing
- Mobilizing lawyers to help vulnerable people through legal aid clinics
- Creating a network of 450 women lawyers
But our focus is on the future - and the next 20 years - as we work to extend the provision of legal aid services and campaign on women and children's human rights, for good governance and greater representation of women in Government.
