5: Background: 

Tanzania Women Lawyers’ Association (TAWLA) is a Non-Governmental Organization established in   1989 and registered in 1990 under the Societies Act (Chapter 337 of the laws). The organization is compliant with the NGOs Act (Chapter 56 of the laws) and obtained NGO status in 2019.

The aims and objectives of the organization are to advocate gender equality, promote human dignity and gender justice through policy, legal and institutional reforms, and community action and media engagement. TAWLA has its Headquarters in Dar es Salaam and zonal offices in Arusha, Dodoma, Mwanza and Tanga.

TAWLA envisage a society that respects and upholds the rights of women, and her mission is to advance women as champions in promoting and protecting the rights of women and good governance through legal empowerment.

6: Responsibilities:

  1. To coordinate and implement TAWLA Strategic Plan at regional level.
  • In collaboration with TAWLA Membership Affairs desk facilitate recruitment of new members; mobilize member’s engagement in TAWLA for effective delivery of the vision at regional level.
  • Coordinate access to justice program for vulnerable women through coordination of Legal Aid Clinic and support to paralegal’s network within the region.
  • Represent clients in cases referred to Courts/Tribunals from the legal Aid Clinic.
  • Mobilize practicing members and other members of the legal fraternity to represent TAWLA Clients in the region in Courts/Tribunals on Pro bono basis.
  1. To engage partners and positively influence decision makers in line with TAWLA objectives;
  • Through implementation of programmes geared at promotion of gender equality through review/amendment of laws and policies that hinder gender equality.
  • Ensure the programme is consistently using uniform messages and modality from TAWLA Communications Strategy and other Organization’s guiding documents.
  • Ensure there is continuous information flow on advocacy events, meetings, initiatives between the region and headquarter and with approval of line manager with other key players.
  • Create a map of partners in the region in the areas of each objective of Strategic Plan.
  • Ensure effective communication between TAWLA and its partners.
  1. General Responsibilities;
  • Oversee day to day activities of Mwanza office.
  • Collaborate with staff in general planning and review meetings.
  • Participate in capacity building of staff where appropriate and relevant.
  • Ensure that the work is carried out at all times with the utmost of privacy and confidentiality in accordance with the terms and conditions of employment.
  • Represent TAWLA at meetings with partners.
  • Commit to promoting equality in terms of race, gender, culture, and disability, so that TAWLA is recognized as an open and welcoming resource that challenges and work to address discrimination.
  • Prepares and submit weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual performance and progressive reports to the line manager.
  • Prepares and submits periodic work plan for activities according to the contracts signed with the Donor for approval by TAWLA and key stakeholders.
  • To follow up with the political dynamics and take charge of emerging issues related to TAWLA areas of focus.
  • Liaise/work with Media and other stakeholders with consent from Executive Director.
  • Provide ongoing monitoring and supervision of regional project officers
  • Handle administrative activities of the department as may be directed.
  • Perform any other duties assigned to her by the Supervisor

7: Work Experience and Qualification:

  • Minimum of a University Degree in Law (LLB) and being registered as an Advocate with valid practicing certificate.
  • Experience in provision of legal aid services, key focus being litigation.
  • Experience in Advocacy work on women rights.
  • Excellent oral/written communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
  • At least three years of experience in the legal profession and in implementing and managing advocacy projects.
  • Must be Computer literate.
  • Has a right to work in Tanzania.
  • Applicant must be active TAWLA member.
